The true threat lies within the heart... Kate McAuley once thought Lucas Barone loved her, and returned that love for all she was worth-until the day he walked away without a word. Now, four years later she answers a knock on her door and finds Luke on her doorstep, broken, bleeding and unconscious. He brings with him all kind of emotions, and all kinds of questions. Where has he been? Why did he leave? And what's an accountant doing with wounds like these?

As a covert ops specialist with the U.S. government, Luke deceived, betrayed and conned so many people he couldn't keep them straight-except Kate. Their time together was magical, until the call came and he was forced to walk away. For four long years, memories of her have kept him alive and sane. Now, hunted by his own government, desperate and injured, Kate is the only one he can trust.

Kate's innocent phone call for help sets in motion an evil that reaches the highest echelons of political power. With accusations of murder and treason hanging over their heads, it'll take every ounce of Luke's training, intelligence-and Kate's trust-to keep them alive.

Warning: Deep emotion, edge of your seat suspense

"Great Summer Read From Start To Finish" 2009-08-07
By L. A. Vitale
I love this novel and found it to be a great read! It draws you in from the very start and keeps you interested through the end of the novel. The characters are well developed and likable. Plus the dialogue between characters is good too. The mix of mystery & romantic-suspense is perfect. The novels ending had some cheesiness to it, which is why I gave this novel a 4 out of 5 rating.... But the slightly cheesy ending isn't enough for me not to recommend this novel to others though.

This is the first novel I've read by Sharon Cullen & I look forward to reading more of her novels in the future.

 "I give it a 3.5 stars (bumped to for 4)" 2009-08-07
By S. Darwin
It all began when Lucas Barone walked out on his then girlfriend, Kate McAuley. Without an explanation, it appeared as though he just disappeared off the ace of the earth...that is, until one day, a knock on Kate's door. Lucas returns, but he is bleeding and nearly unconscious - what is Kate to do? This man broke her heart, but she can't just turn her back on him - but Lucas comes with baggage. As a co-op special forces agent, he has some very powerful enemies that want to see him (and Kate) dead - but why? The pair decide to hit the road trying to elude what almost seems inevitable. I'll stop there, as I don't want to spoil the story. The story is good and the characters are convincing, but the book does lose momentum once Lucas and Kate reach their safe haven. At this point all the suspense seems manufactured and the story tries to pass off some rather unconvincing excuses for what is happening. Deception by Sharon Cullen isn't a bad story, it just needs to pick a genre and stick with it. The book starts as a very intriguing suspense, but then it unexpectedly shifts toward a rather unconvincing romance...and when it tries to revert back toward suspense, it fails. Overall, I give it a 3.5 stars (bumped to for 4....another book I would highly recommend that masters the dual genre is Geo Tin's novel Sirens: Sirens (Enchanted Song) simply magnificent.

"romance with a little suspence" 2009-07-12
By S. adams (macungie pa)
Not my normal read, but I figured it was a freebie at the time, I couldn't put it down. I wanted to see what happened to Luke after he walked out of kate's life 18 months ago. He showed up on her door one night and half dead and she nursed him back to health, what do you do when someone is after you and trying to kill you? You run, and that is what they did. Luke had to figure out why? And wold they get back together when it was all over?

 "Had its moments..." 2009-07-08
By ReadingHobbit
This was a Kindle freebie, and was an okay read. It had some suspenseful parts, but the pacing was slow-ish overall. The romance was okay, but there wasn't enough tension/sizzle between the characters, so it didn't "wow" me. I did finish it, though, so it gets 3 stars.
