"good working tool, not that much for the plastic cover" 2006-07-27
By Essam Mostafa K. Labib (Kuwait, Farwania Kuwait)
i got this drill 5 dayes back, and the first immprestion about it was it looks cheep, because of the kind of plastic they use, also the handle grip is not that good as it is in plastic not rubber, also i found that it is kind of heavy, also there is one remark about the charger which has 2 LED's one green and one red, both kept luminated all the time even after 10 hours of charging, even it was noted on the charger that it will charge from 3-5 hours only.

for the motor, gear and variable bush button they seemed to work perfectly good which is the most important thing.

extra battery is not available till now.

end opinion, it is good performer for the kind of money paied for, and worth buying for normal house use.

 "lack of power" 2009-07-22
By Larry D. Strom
Although I have bought Hitachi tools in the past I have never bought their cordless products. I found the balance and compactness of the product impressive. The power for the product and torque was not. It should have been listed as pounds of torque which I would estimate to be less then 100. This is not enough to drive 3 inch screws.. Even 2 1/2 drywall screws were a problem..The battery does seem to hold a charge extremely well...But time will tell. I own a Makita 9 volt niCa also for 20 years.. It has twice the power and only 9 volts...the 10.8 li-ion is great for light to medium projects only! It also would be nice if the product description would say that it only takes 1/4 inch shanks and is not adjustable

I bought 3 Crap-tachi drills that came with 6 batteries. After a year and a half 5 of the batteries have gone bad. You think you got this great warranty with it you don't its a joke read the fine print, it only covers the drill it self, so what do you do with a drill with no batteries? I called the customer service line its even worst, The customer service agent told me I should have bough a Makita instead and I would have not had this problem. So I went down to there repair center and talked to the guy about it, he says the all this Hitachi stuff is junk, and they have nothing but problems with it.  "Power in a small, lightweight package ..." 2009-05-14
By Gregory M. Brettell (Reno, NV USA)
I'll make this short ... this little driver is a powerhouse!

Soon after I received I had a job to do ... my kids thought it would be interesting to see what was in our neighbors yard, SO ... they decided to tear out the aging fence boards to go check it out. I was horrified to see a gaping hole in our fence leading into the neighbors yard!

I fired up the new drill and had that fence repaired in no time at all (I actually enjoyed it ... but don't tell my kids that!).

This tool is well worth it (I purchased when it was selling for $62.50 and free shipping -- can't beat that price). This is better than my expensive DeWalt (which is much heavier, way less power, and won't stand on its' own when you set it down -- not balanced).

O.K. that wasn't very short afterall, but hopefully you enjoyed the story.

Buy it ... you'll love it!

"Great feel, great battery life" 2009-03-29
By Benbrilling (Santa Cruz, CA USA)
I really like the feel of this tool. I bought it about 6 months ago and charged it up, played with it a bit, but haven't really had a need to use it until now. The battery still had plenty of charge after sitting in the case for 6 months! A NiCad would need a full a charge before using after that long. I like the balance, the controls, and the impression of quality I get from it. The quick change is really handy and if you buy a set of quick change drill bits you will be ready to easily tackle any medium sized job with ease with this little guy. My only complaint is the case it comes in. It is obviously made for a much larger drill and is a real shame to spoil the convenience of a compact drill with a big half-empty case. Because of the built in interior contours of the case (made to fit a larger drill) it isn't practical to use the wasted space for additional bits or drills. But that's not enough of a bother to knock off any stars from my top rating.

Edit: After using this for several months I have grown to really appreciate the built-in light. It really helps you to position the blade on the screw before you start. The trick is to just pull the trigger slightly and the light comes on but the drill doesn't start turning until you pull the trigger more (after you've seated the bit into the screw).

 "I like it" 2009-02-22
By Ronald J. Diamond (Madison, WI)
I bought the hitachi drill to replace a no-brand drill that burned out after only a bit of use. I have had it a month, and so far it seems like a very solid, very well made machine. I have not had it long enough to know for sure, but it has the feel of a machine that will last a long time. There has been discussion of the switch on the machine. I have used mine for drilling between stud spaces, where the switch seems to work very well, and as a sander for a lathe. The switch does not work well in this application, it is too hard to keep on, but i have used an arm band (i had one around for "tennis elbow) to "lock" the switch on while sanding. This is easy, fast, does not get in the way, and works fine. I would have preferred some way to lock the switch on for use in sanding, but am OK with the drill as is.

I considered the Milwaukee close quarter drill, but needed a true right angle for some of my drilling. I also considered the Makita, but the Hitachi has a more powerful motor and was less expensive.

This was purchased to drill two holes in a tight spot on an engine. This drill was very compact, and fit well within the tight space. I liked the switch, it was nice not to have to hold it "on" yet still be able to shut it off quickly.

Definitely a good tool.

"Powerful drill in a great configuration" 2008-07-03
By Arthur Held (Missoula MT)
I recently added the Hitachi D10YB right angle drill to my toolbox in preparation for a project rebuilding a camper. I've been using it heavily for two days, and have the following observations:

PROs: the drill has strong torque at all speeds. The controls for direction and speed are easy to access. The "paddle" type on/off switch is a lifesaver when you are reaching into tight corners. With the low speed, you can also use this as an electric screwdriver in places you can't get with the standard gear (but be careful - its easy to twist the head right off the screw!) The reversible screw-in handle is very handy, and without the handle on you can get into even tighter corners. The chuck is a key type, and really holds bits and drivers well - round and hex shaft (I haven't had a bit come loose yet); the chuck is guarded just a touch above the top and sides: this means you are less likely to mar your finished surfaces than when trying to lay a big nosed cordless drill with a keyless chuck on its side to squeeze near a ceiling or in a cabinet, AND it means you aren't accidentally loosening the chuck when you bump into a wall while running in reverse.

CONs: the Paddle switch took me a few holes to get used to, but now I love it.

SUMMARY: quiet. Powerful. Feels good in my hand. This one is a real keeper!

"Excellent drill & I like the switch!" 2008-02-14
By ScottW (Northwest Washington)
Excellent quality throughout. Others have complained about the switch, but I find it very easy to use. The trigger slides easily into the "on' position, and a simple squeeze pops the catch and it slides back into the off position. For me, this makes a lot more sense than a trigger switch when working in tight quarters.

Nice compact and professional drill that seems to have the best price. Switch works fine. You can both tap it on/off or you can slide it down and hold it (it will stop if you release). I would certainly recommend this drill assuming I have not problems with it down the line.

1. Wrong item initially sent (cordless ordered, drill with cord sent); contacted seller who apologized & agreed to send correct item.

2. When correct item received, it did not include stud finder originally included in purchase.

3. When correct item was received, batteries for stud finder were bad, exploded & corrosion was all over inside of drill & case...along with human hair...DISGUSTING!!!

4. Response time adequate, but I won't buy from this seller again, too many problems for what was supposed to be a Christmas gift.

 "Excellent cordless drill" 2008-01-02
By J. Scenga
I've had mine for a couple weeks and, so far, have used it twice. Works great and is no heavier than my old 12 volt cordless that I've had for about 5 years. The 18 volt battery was a plus for me since I purchased the B&D cordless trimmer last spring, and it uses the same battery(I got 2 with the trimmer). This drill offers more power than you'll ever need for household projects. And having only 5 torque settings isn't really a big deal either. I had no problem assembling a plastic table for my grandsons for Christmas and never stripped one screw. The only drawback that I can see is the storage case could have been designed a little better. You have to remove the battery to put the drill back in the case. But, there is room for everything, including the stud-finder, in the case.

To be honest, I would buy this product again and I've already recommended it to a number of friends.

I chose this drill for two reasons. 1. To replace a model that just stopped working but used the same batteries which would give me additional working time before recharging and 2. I like the compact design that lets me use it in more places and it should be less tiering. I can't comment of performance because I have not really used it much yet. But being a Black & Decker I expect I will be as happy with this one as I was with the old one.

 "Mediocre at best" 2009-07-29
By Bugaloo
I picked this up for $40 on sale in a local store. It's adequate for most tasks, but no better.

The battery can only be charged when it's plugged into the drill, so you can't alternate between two to keep working. It doesn't have a variable speed setting, so controlling the speed when driving screws is hard. The battery capacity seems small, plus there's no charge level indicator on the device or charger, so you don't know when it's fully recharged. Finally, the RPM is very low compared to equivalents--getting through steel is going to take you a while.

If you can get it on sale for a reasonable price, and don't want to do too many adventurous things with a power drill, consider giving it a look.

"Not pleased with this product" 2009-07-25
By Truthful Reviewer (Valley of the Sun)
Very disappointed with this product. The drill is the smallest that B&D produces, under powered. The battery may be fine but the charger is a waste. It is a plug in adapter that actually plugs into the wall and drill, not a stand alone charger. Without the drill available, you can not charge the battery. No lights to signal when it is charged. It has very few (none) features that one would desire in a drill. I have the B&D set that includes drill, circular saw, TWO batteries, DUAL battery charger and a jig saw. Step up to a better package !!

"Great drill but orphan battery type" 2009-08-07
By Michael Winters
I like lighter duty hammer drills like this one from Milwaukee as I can turn off the hammer action and just use it as a drill. With the heavy duty commercial hammer drills I can turn off the rotation but not the hammer action and for some drill bits the hammer action will quickly destroy the drill's cutting tips or even knock them off (as they are brazed onto the tool). The hammer action of this drill is adequate for small holes in masonry which is where we have used this drill. For large holes we have moved away from the TCT core drills to the laser welded dry cutting diamond core bits, like the ones from Blue Boar and Husqvarna, where no hammer action is needed or recommended.

The drill is an excellent drill though a bit on the heavy side for extended overhead use (where a Makita is a better choice). The best feature of the drill is its ability to use old NiCads that I had from an older Milwaukee 18v drill. Milwaukee has recently started to sell its new "M series" lithium-ion cordless which are replacing the old "V series" drills like this one. The "V" drills work with either the V lithium-ion batteries or the old NiCad batteries, but the new "M" drills work only with the new "M" type lithium-ion batteries.

Over time it will become more difficult to find the "V" batteries as this was a pretty short model run by Milwaukee. Anyone buying a drill they want to be able to use and get new batteries for over the next 5-10 years would be better off getting the M18 or another brand that is more stable in this regard.

One aspect of this drill that is much better over the new M18 is the design of the second handle which can be positioned (like the DeWalt XRP) anywhere in a 360 degree arc. The new M18 side handle has to be 90 degrees, left or right side, to the drill handle is quite a bit more limiting.

A nice aspect of the new Milwaukee M18 lithium-ion drills is that there are 2 different sizes of power packs so a lighter one can be used by many people who will not need the amps of the full pack and have a lighter drill to work with and the recharge times are half as long for the smaller battery packs. Something that is a little curious is that the Makita lithium-ion battery packs charge in 15 minutes while the small Milwaukee M-type battery packs take 30 minutes and the large battery packs take over an hour to charge.

For most people the full kit will be a better deal but if you have an old Milwaukee 18v NiCad drill and want to gradually ease into lithium-ion this would on the surface seem like a good approach. Unfortunately with the new M-type drills that will not work with either Milwaukee Ni-Cad or Milwaukee V-type lithium ion batteries, this drill is a bit of a dead end and a dubious investment over the long run.

Having been bit in the past by manufacturers that stopped producing batteries for early NiCad drivers and drills I am now much more cautious and want to verify the easy availability of replacement batteries (at local stores) before making a purchase decision. Whether Makita products are better or not is up for debate but their replacement batteries have the widest distribution of any manufacturer which should be a consideration.

If you are chucking your old NiCad batteries there are places including Home Depot that have recycling bins which keeps the deadly cadmium out of local landfills and the water supply.

 "Unbelievable value" 2009-07-13
By Jeremy A. Miller (Raleigh, NC)
I purchased the 824-20 (bare tool) here on Amazon, but the seller was bestcutleryandcookware and the price was $69.99 + $10 shipping. As soon as I made the purchase I noticed the retailer associated to this link changed and the price went up a few dollars. So I can only speak for my experience throught the retailer that sold me the drill.

The drill was apparently from a larger set, so it did not come in the original packaging. It was brand new however and came with a user manual and the detachable handle.

For $80, this is an incredible deal. The model has been discontinued, which doesn't make any difference to me other than driving down the price. I used to own a dewalt, and this drill is much higher quality. I can't believe I was able to buy this drill for the price I paid. It is one of my finest tools in my garage, and I have a lot.

It has lots of torque and plenty of battery life. I love the chuck as well. It has a ratcheting mechanism that really locks down on the bit. I didn't know if I would use the hammer action that much but have used it quite a bit. Works great on concrete. I bought this as my primary cordless drill and so far I am overjoyed with it. Fantastic product.

"No doubt the best cordless drill" 2009-01-10
By Jesse Dover (Providence, RI USA)
I am a finish carpenter/ contractor and have used so many different cordless drills over the years (Dewalt, Ryobi, Makita). Every time they died on me I changed brands until I found this drill. I bought mine in a combo with the sawzall, and circular saw for $250 on sale. This drill performs far superior to all the others in every way. The most important are the strength and battery life/power. This drill keeps going through hot and cold conditions, and doesn't bog down as it gets to the end of it's cycle. This thing is great for drilling into concrete and hard woods. I have put mine through a lot and it shows no signs of ever stopping, or loss of power. The batteries last forever, and show you how much they have left on side. Also it can be used with ni cad or lithium batteries, and the lithium charger charges both.

Also this drill may be a little heavy but it is built indestructable. I dropped mine off a 40ft roof onto the pavement, and it is fine. The bit it had in it broke and it got scratched up a bit, but the chuck is still straight, and the hard plastic body is still strong and in good shape! Other drills I have owned have broken from falling from a 7ft ladder (Dewalt). Milwaukee spares no expense on the quality of their tools.

My favorite aspect of this drill is the chuck for two reasons. As stated in other reviews it is made of metal and carbide for a better grip on your bits, and durability. Also the chuck ratchets tight to whatever you put in it's jaws. The motor keeps the chuck locked in place when the drill is not in use so you don't have to tighten it with two hands, or by running the drill with your other hand on the chuck. I have never had the chuck slip on anything I have put in it, the ratchet really gets a great grip on the bit or driver.

There are so many reasons to get this drill. Too many to write here. There is no doubt it is the strongest and best made drill on the market. It will be the last time you switch brands, that's for sure.
