 "DeWalt 14 Volt Drill" 2009-05-23
By John Tate (Michigan)
Have always had a 14 volt DeWalt. No need for the 18, too heavy. Wore my 14 out so I ordered this one. Delivered fast and used it almost immediately. Can't beat the price, especially with the case and two batteries and charger. Remember to charge the batteries first.

By RK (Flint, MI)
Excellent product...I would recommend this to anyone looking for a drill. I had a Ryobi cordless drill prior to purchasing this and after 7 years it finally died. As a result of using Dewalt drills owned by friends, I thought I would purchase one myself. This drill exceeded my expectations greatly. I loved my Ryobi drill and did not want to let it go but glad that I made this purchase instead of another Ryobi...

This is my 3rd 14.4 volt drill, 3rd generation has really improved. The shorter body allows me to work in tighter areas. I origionally thought the led was a joke but I have noticed that the led light has been pretty handy as I have used it in areas with low lighting, it does work. I was also pretty impressed with the speedy battery charge time. It's nice to see that dewalt has stayed with the same battery configuration since my first drill back 10-15 yrs ago.

 "DEWALT drill" 2009-05-09
By J. Miller (Rainbow Springs, FL)
This is a very good drill which I bought to replace another 1/2-inch drill which kept overheating after a short period of use preventing me from finishing jobs. The rpm on this drill is somewhat slower but it definitely provides plenty of needed power. Not sure how it would work out in the workplace on an everyday basis but for my occasional needs it works just fine.

 "Beastly Drill" 2009-03-16
By Z. Abedin (St Louis, MO)
I bought this drill about a year ago in anticipation of a yearly construction project I do for a student group. During this project, my drill got banged up, had paint poured on it, and was abused and dropped from scaffolding, without ever quitting. Its major job was the (seemingly endless) drilling of 1" holes using old, blunt, overused spade bits. Despite the poor condition of the bits attached, my drill never slowed down, and the handle let me power through studs. Where others were getting wrist pain with their cordless drills, and having to change batteries, or re-tighten their keyless chucks, i just kept going. The chuck is SOLID, and lets you really clamp down on bits, and the metal housing for the drill's gearbox makes this thing practically indestructible. I even used this thing to drive several 3" deck screws and it wasnt that hard to maneuver, (though I dont think i'd want to be working overhead with this drill unless i was really in a pinch)

as a side note: my dad actually has this same exact drill, but with a keyless chuck, and though the keyless chuck is also made of metal and well designed, i've found that the keyed chuck simply provides better performance, and is worth the hassle of carrying a key around

"Buy it, you'll like it." 2009-01-07
By koboilila (massachusetts)
I have used one of these for five or six years now. It is very strong and very tuff; I can not tell you how often this thing has bounced off a concrete floor and it still works like a champ.

Cordless drills are great, I use two of them constantly, but sometimes you just want a solid corded drill and this one fits the bill, strong but not too heavy or bulky; in fact I think that it is lighter than my 18v cordless.

I use it primarily for drilling pocket holes for building cabinets and such, when the batteries would have already drained on the cordless drills this one is still going strong.

"chuck loosens with any vibration" 2008-04-02
By B. Stenman
I found that it was necessary to keep retightening the chuck if the operation involved any amount of vibration, like using a hole saw in plywood. I have a DeWalt drill with a keyless chuck and it stays tight in the same circumstances.

For some reason DeWalt includes a cheap plastic storage case with some drills but not with others. The cases are made of very flimsy material with crude fasteners. Buying one for a drill that comes only with its cardboard box involves spending nearly $40. Milwaukee and Makita provide sturdy plastic cases with their drills so I don't know why DeWalt does not do the same.

 "Inexpensive, but very usueful." 2009-05-08
By Howard I. Cohen (Waltham, MA)
Product is neat, simple to use and well done for its application. It's application is to drive screws and small drill bits.

I'll discuss them separately.

The screwdriver function was my primary interest and it works well. It is small, light and for its size and application has reasonable torque. The reverse direction switch is very stiff. That may be intentional so if your finger slips up the trigger you wont accidentally reverse the direction. On the other hand, when you do want to back out a screw, it is very hard to activate. Going forward is very smooth.

I like the kit of different bits including the 4 drill bits. Which brings us to the second item, the drill. It is quite useful as a drill, but limit yourself to soft materials, like wood or plastic. Because there is no chuck, the drill bit wobbles a little bit, again, usable in soft materials. Another reason to limit drilling to soft materials is that the bits are not standard and you don't want to do anything that will hasten their getting dull. Then you're in to the problemn of sharpening them or replacing them. I was very satisfied with its behavior when building up a small plastic Radio Shack "Project Box." The thing wobbled a bit, but I got all the holes I needed, where I wanted them and sized as best I could with only 4 bits to work with. But having all the functionality in one tool was very nice.

The only serious criticism is that the nylon carrying case is too small, making it hard to get things in and out. Ironically the pocket for the drill bits is very loose and I've already lost a couple. They simply fell out.

Final score, not an A-plus, but certainly a strong B-plus or A-minus.

 "Good value" 2007-10-13
By Fernando G. del C (Houston, TX United States)
So far, it works fine but there are two things that worry me:

* It doesn't seem to be high-powered. I used it for a simple job, so far, but I don't know if it can handle more heavy stuff like drilling a wall. I'm a bit doubtful.

* The battery seems to be non-replaceable. Once the battery life is down (hopefully many years from now), probably one has to get rid of the drill. I dislike disposable stuff.

So, bottom line, even if the price is quite low, I suppose you get what you pay for.

 "Cabinet shop workhorse" 2008-08-12
By S. Griffin (Victor, Idaho)
I now have 3 of these drills for my cabinet shop business, the oldest I purchased over 10 years ago. One has a square driver, one a philips driver and one a countersinker and those bits just stay in the drills. They are light, compact and plenty strong enough almost all drilling/driver jobs and last forever. The batteries last about 5 years of hard use, and because you can get the whole kit for under a hundred bucks, I often just by another drill when the batteries get tired.

The lightness and compact size is really nice when reaching in cabinets for hardware installation. I have also used them when building houses for screwing on sheetrock and metal roofing. I'm just not victim of the trend for bigger and bigger drills--unless you go lithium, a 14- 18 volt drill is a drag to haul around all day..

In the shop, I use electric plug in drills for heavy duty drilling--like 1/2 holes or pocket screw drills. Eventually I will get a couple 18 volt makita lithium drills and retire the corded, but thats not a cheap upgrade to do.

So 5 stars for these little drills. I certainly hope Makita keeps this line going.

By P. Hall (gulf coast of florida)
This drill is exactly what I've been looking for. The higher-priced Craftsman models and those like it were a terrible disappointment. Batteries didn't last and replacements were expensive.

But Makita is a brand I trust. Years ago I had a Makita rechargeable, and I USED IT TO DEATH. This one is just as good. Tough, durable, and priced right.

 "I should have known...." 2008-02-27
By Ricardo (New York City)
After having my Makita 9.6v drill-driver (the older long-handled model) stolen a few years ago, I purchased a 13.2v Craftsman drill. What a big mistake.

As I no longer owned my own home, I figured that the Craftsman would be good enough. WRONG!!! No matter what I tried, the batteries for that thing would not keep a charge. How frustrating is it to pick up a tool that you charged 2 days before only to find it dead. This happened time after time. I finally got disgusted enough to simply throw it into the trash where it belonged.

Remembering how much I loved and trusted my old Makita, I decided to again buy that brand. All I can say is that Makita still makes the best rechargeable tools. Be it for professional or lighter-duty home use, it's hard to go wrong with Makita.

I'm not sure what standards are used to rate battery voltages. It seems odd that the two lower voltage Makita's I've owned outperformed the higher voltage Craftsman. I'm not talking about holding a charge. I'm talking about torque and power. The Craftsman, with it higher voltage, just didn't have the "juice" of the Makita.

 "Mediocre at best" 2009-07-29
By Bugaloo
I picked this up for $40 on sale in a local store. It's adequate for most tasks, but no better.

The battery can only be charged when it's plugged into the drill, so you can't alternate between two to keep working. It doesn't have a variable speed setting, so controlling the speed when driving screws is hard. The battery capacity seems small, plus there's no charge level indicator on the device or charger, so you don't know when it's fully recharged. Finally, the RPM is very low compared to equivalents--getting through steel is going to take you a while.

If you can get it on sale for a reasonable price, and don't want to do too many adventurous things with a power drill, consider giving it a look.

"Not pleased with this product" 2009-07-25
By Truthful Reviewer (Valley of the Sun)
Very disappointed with this product. The drill is the smallest that B&D produces, under powered. The battery may be fine but the charger is a waste. It is a plug in adapter that actually plugs into the wall and drill, not a stand alone charger. Without the drill available, you can not charge the battery. No lights to signal when it is charged. It has very few (none) features that one would desire in a drill. I have the B&D set that includes drill, circular saw, TWO batteries, DUAL battery charger and a jig saw. Step up to a better package !!

My significant other bailed on me, and took the drill (well OK, it WAS HIS....!!) heheh. I was lost without it! So I looked at the offerings on Amazon, and came across this one. I really like it. It does the job, easy to handle and easy to install and remove the bits.

The one thing I would like to have had with this is a hard case to protect it, but all in all, I give it a thumbs up.

The 32614-2G is an upgrade of Bosch's classic model 32614. For the most part, this is the same as its predecessor, which in this case is a good thing. It's easy to see why this drill was chosen as a 2006 "Best Buy" by a leading consumer magazine. The primary difference is the addition of Bosch's Bluecore battery technology, which offers 50% longer battery life and a 30-minute charge time.

As a class, Bosch Compact Tough drills are designed to offer extreme durability in a small package. The 32614-2G delivers tons of power in a compact size that makes it easier to maneuver in tight spaces than many other drills in its class. At a relatively slim 4.2 pounds and with an ergonomic, soft-grip handle, this is a very comfortable drill to use. The Bosch-built unibody power train that contains the motor, gearbox, and clutch in one contiguous unit for durability and the best alignment possible. That and the Durashield housing, made from a flexible ABS nylon blend, makes the tool extremely resistant to damage, including multiple 1-story drops in Bosch's tests. A steel-reinforced collar protects the tool even when it is dropped on the chuck.

Other features include a 15-position clutch to prevent stripped screwheads and buried screws; a ratcheting, single-sleeve 3/8-inch chuck for one handed bit changes; and a 2-speed gear box to provide optimal performance for both high-torque and high-speed applications. The integrated bit holder at the base of the handle is easy to access.--Tod Harrick

Bluecore Battery Technology
Bluecore batteries offer up to 50% longer life than comparable batteries of the same voltage and a fast charging time. Special cooling rods absorb the head inside the batteries. Sensors within the batteries communicate with the new Bosch 30-minute chargers to ensure optimal results. Bluecore batteries are completely compatible with all Bosch cordless tools.

Fast 30-Minute Charger
Available in single or dual bay models, this charging station charges all Bosch 9.6-, 12-, 14.4-, 18-, and 24-volt cordless tool batteries in 30 minutes. A microprocessor measures internal battery temperatures to optimize energy flow and maximize battery charge capacity. 2 LED indicators make it easy to see when your batteries are fully charged.

 "A great tool" 2007-06-03
By MikeC (NM)
I absolutely love this tool. I use it all the time and I can't say enough good about it. Its powerful, the batteries last forever (All day of continuous use). The balance is great, and the motor has huge torque (it was actually pulled from my grip once). The only complaint is that the bit holder can't actually hold any normal bits because of its weird design (it can only hold little bitty ones). But since I only use Phillips and square drive screws and I have a dual bit, its not a big deal for me.

I am so impressed that I am going to replace my new Maytag dishwasher(one of the worst I have ever had - I'll never trust Consumer Reports again)with a Bosch (even though Consumer Reports gave it a good review).

Every Bosch tool I have has exceeded my expectations to the point now that if I need a tool, and Bosch makes it, I will buy it from Bosch.

I've owned this drill for 2 years, and have used it for a variety of household projects (I've built my basement, washroom and outdoor fencing with this thing). Other reviews will point out the power and durability of this unit..which is fantastic for it's size..but more importantly, and often not addressed, is the grip mold & hand fatigue. This is where it excels. From the many drills I've used throughout the years this is by far the best I've encountered in this case. Sweaty palms will not be such an issue during a hard days work. The grip itself perfectly fits into my medium-sized hands. It's really a joy to work with. The warranty is also something to think about (not that I've even needed it), but kudos to Bosch for backing up their product.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it for many years.

 "I love this drill" 2007-02-15
By Sally Tittmann (NY, NY)
I love this drill. It is extremely comfortable and powerful. Screws go into any wood like a hot knife through butter. It seems to have more settings than necessary (I only use one) but that doesn't bother me. The chuck closes quickly and bits stay tight. The battery charges even faster than I need it to. I still have my old Makita 12V which I use to avoid switching bits and drivers too often, but when that battery gets used up and I use the Bosch to drive in the screws the difference is extreme.
