 "I like it" 2009-02-22
By Ronald J. Diamond (Madison, WI)
I bought the hitachi drill to replace a no-brand drill that burned out after only a bit of use. I have had it a month, and so far it seems like a very solid, very well made machine. I have not had it long enough to know for sure, but it has the feel of a machine that will last a long time. There has been discussion of the switch on the machine. I have used mine for drilling between stud spaces, where the switch seems to work very well, and as a sander for a lathe. The switch does not work well in this application, it is too hard to keep on, but i have used an arm band (i had one around for "tennis elbow) to "lock" the switch on while sanding. This is easy, fast, does not get in the way, and works fine. I would have preferred some way to lock the switch on for use in sanding, but am OK with the drill as is.

I considered the Milwaukee close quarter drill, but needed a true right angle for some of my drilling. I also considered the Makita, but the Hitachi has a more powerful motor and was less expensive.

"Well made, does the job." 2008-07-23
By Aaron Dewar
This was purchased to drill two holes in a tight spot on an engine. This drill was very compact, and fit well within the tight space. I liked the switch, it was nice not to have to hold it "on" yet still be able to shut it off quickly.

Definitely a good tool.

"Powerful drill in a great configuration" 2008-07-03
By Arthur Held (Missoula MT)
I recently added the Hitachi D10YB right angle drill to my toolbox in preparation for a project rebuilding a camper. I've been using it heavily for two days, and have the following observations:

PROs: the drill has strong torque at all speeds. The controls for direction and speed are easy to access. The "paddle" type on/off switch is a lifesaver when you are reaching into tight corners. With the low speed, you can also use this as an electric screwdriver in places you can't get with the standard gear (but be careful - its easy to twist the head right off the screw!) The reversible screw-in handle is very handy, and without the handle on you can get into even tighter corners. The chuck is a key type, and really holds bits and drivers well - round and hex shaft (I haven't had a bit come loose yet); the chuck is guarded just a touch above the top and sides: this means you are less likely to mar your finished surfaces than when trying to lay a big nosed cordless drill with a keyless chuck on its side to squeeze near a ceiling or in a cabinet, AND it means you aren't accidentally loosening the chuck when you bump into a wall while running in reverse.

CONs: the Paddle switch took me a few holes to get used to, but now I love it.

SUMMARY: quiet. Powerful. Feels good in my hand. This one is a real keeper!

"Excellent drill & I like the switch!" 2008-02-14
By ScottW (Northwest Washington)
Excellent quality throughout. Others have complained about the switch, but I find it very easy to use. The trigger slides easily into the "on' position, and a simple squeeze pops the catch and it slides back into the off position. For me, this makes a lot more sense than a trigger switch when working in tight quarters.

"Nice drill. Switch is fine." 2007-11-28
By M. B. Weppner (Buffalo, NY)
Nice compact and professional drill that seems to have the best price. Switch works fine. You can both tap it on/off or you can slide it down and hold it (it will stop if you release). I would certainly recommend this drill assuming I have not problems with it down the line.

Drill everything ! Drill anything WHERE IS THE CARRYING CASE ?!?!!?

I drill 3 1/8 bugle heads through masonite as if it was pine, my paddle bit churns drywall as easy as cake mix.

We had a large rock in a tight place that couldn't be sledged hammered, so we took a mason bit and just punched holes into until we could break it up with framing hammers.

They should make a horror movie and give the killer this drill instead of a chainsaw, it's that killer.

Bosch’s two-speed gearbox lets you match speed and torque to the job at hand. A dual-function control lets you switch quickly and easily from rotation to hammer action, and a mounted depth gauge is a nice touch other makers ought to adopt. The auxiliary handle attaches easily and rotates a full 360 degrees to let you work at any angle. The keyed chuck accepts up to ½-inch bits, and at 5 pounds, it’s far from the heaviest drill of its caliber. The soft grip and comfortable trigger with lock-on button further relieve hand strain. The case will withstand all kinds of jobsite abuse. You can’t beat Bosch.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

 "Inexcusable Quality" 2009-06-30
By D. L. Wisgerhof (Midwest US of A)
Hammer/Drill switch did not function out of box. Two speed switch did not function out of box. I did not know how to give Zero stars but that is what this product deserves. There is NO excuse for this kind of shoddy quality/workmanship. I also recently purchased a Bosch (Dremel) rotary tool that failed after two minutes of use. Returned for repair and it once again failed in less than two minutes. I threw it in the trash. I should have learned my lesson about Bosch quality then. Be assured I will never order another Bosch product!!

I bought this drill just to put in Tapcons. Previously it took me 2 minutes or more, with a lot of muscle power, to drill the hole for a Tapcon. With this drill it literally took 15 seconds. It's powerful and feels good in my hands. I highly recommend it for anyone doing any type of drilling in concrete. And it's a Bosch so you know it's great quality.

 "Drill for basement windows." 2009-06-05
By Allan D. Morrisseau (International Falls, MN)
I had to put in six basement windows in concrete. I took out the old window and frame which left just a concrete frame. I read these reviews about hammer drills and picked this one. I needed to put a board on each side of the concrete, measure the height and cut two pieces of treated lunber to fit the sides of the hole. I drilled starter holes through the boards and then held one at a time to the side with help from my son. I took the boards away and drilled the rest of the hole with the Bosch hammer drill. I used just enough pressure to feel the drill, drilling into the concrete. It made the holes in the concrete real easy. I took the boards and used tapcon screws and screwed the boards into the concrete frame. I went to a store which sold windows and bought a replacement window and then brought it home and then nailed it to the boards. Then it was just a matter of making a frame around the replacement window, using the hammer drill when I needed it. I have since put in 5 more basement windows. The Bosch hammer drill makes put in basement windows real easy. The best investment I made for putting windows in concrete was the Bosch hammer drill. I learned to become and expert, since putting in the first window. If ever I have to take them out, it will be real easy. I recommend that anyone putting in basement windows to buy this drill. It worked great, I had never used a hammer drill before. 5 stars.

"Great Drill For Garden Auger!" 2009-06-29
By Joseph W. Casale (West Hartford, CT USA)
I bought this drill to use with a 2.75" x 26" Bulb/Plant Auger and a 4.75" x 26" Planting Auger, both of which I purchased from Gempler's. The keyless chuck makes it easy to exchange these augers and holds them in securely. This is a powerful drill which makes using these augers a snap for drilling holes in the ground. But you do have to hold on securely. If you hit a rock or tree root, the drill will catch and spin your wrist around if you are not careful. I also bought two 50 foot, 12-gauge three-wire, grounded extension cords for work farther out in my backyard, and the drill works fine. I'm buying a lot more plants for my rock garden and butterfly garden because planting is so much easier now. Great Product!

 "Excellent product" 2008-12-09
By Mark J. Harrington (Granby, CO)
I have had this model for over a year now and am ordering another for a gift to my electrician friend. I was amused by some of the reviews - Joe's in particular. This is a great drill. I used (abused) the predecessor with keyed chuck for over 20 years before replacing it with this model last year. Joe - the cord is wonderful the way it is. It disconnects for easier replacement. Over the 20+ years I replaced the cord on the last one twice. The handle (sissy bar) sticks out that far for added leverage. Put a 4" hole saw on this baby and it has enough torque to break your arm. Since I am a contractor I use a hole hawg for mixing drywall mud and heavy stuff. I use my three cordlesses for most light drilling and srewdriving. I use a SDS hammerdrill for concrete. However - I have used these magnums for all of the above when it was more expedient or the more proper tool was not close by. This thing can do it all, do it well and do it quickly. It's relatively small size might be misleading. I recommend the proper drill for your job at hand as mentioned above but I cannot imagine a better all-round tool for a homeowner who does not have all the drills I do. Joe - don't badmouth a great tool because you do not know how to use it's design features.

 "OK" 2008-10-06
By Joe S. Powell (Wellington, OH)
This drill works well; is sturdy and strong; chuck grips the bits well. I am not sure what the removeable cord does for it though. I also wish it had some sort or "hook" or "loop" to use for hanging it on ladders or a tool belt. I also wish it were made in USA - I thought it was when I ordered it. I also wish the clamp-on handlebar has the grip closer to the drill instead of extending out so far.

"good for what it is" 2009-07-14
By Addison J. Brock (Lihue, Hawaii)
I've been a carpenter on kauai for about 4 years and i really like this drill. It has enough power to bor som pretty big holes into pressure treated lumber but what i like is it doesn't have so much power that it will torque your wrist. I have an old milwauke with tons of power it's a really good drill but sometimes its better not to have so much power for example on a ladder when you can only hold the drill with one hand. so i give it 5 stars because it is exactly what i was hoping for and it is also heavy duty and at a good price.

"Great drill for a great price!" 2009-07-05
By Jeff Robison
We were building some furniture with our 14.4V cordless Hitachi drill when we realized it wasn't powerful enough. We decided to get a corded drill for some extra power. We picked this drill up and it does a great job. It forced screws through 4x4s and other boards with ease. We didn't have to bother pre-drilling our holes either. The keyless chuck can be a bit weak if you are trying to use a large bit to drill a large hole, but that's not what this drill is made for, so I'm not figuring that into my review. Overall this is a great drill.

"Could be an OK 3rd or 4th drill" 2009-06-23
By Antonio (Canada)
I bought this as a lightweight powerful complement to a cordless and an older Sears drill. It is OK for drilling but not for screws : the trigger is nearly all or nothing and usually strips heads ; in that regards the old Sears is way superior. The chuck works well but is a bit small for tightening by hand. Also the cord is too short and the usual lousy quality plastic - the trigger problems is such that I hesitate putting in the time to replace the cord with quality rubber.

"A Real Workhorse Tool - Highly Recommended" 2009-06-13
By CFH (Blue Ridge Summit, PA USA)
We use the Hitachi D10VH Drill almost daily for the past 3 years in our small business, mostly to stir thick silicone using a paint mixxer attachment but also to drill holes in wax and mettal.

This is a real bargin for a fairly powerfull and dependable drill. The variable speed control is great since too much speed when using a mixxer attachment would cause a real mess! Changing bits and attachments is quick and easy using the keyless chuck. In addition, it has a nice long cord, so we don't need to mess with an extention cord for most jobs.

A good basic drill that has lasted a long time with a lot of use. If this one dies, I'll buy another one. Highly recommended!

 "Great balance drill" 2009-02-23
By Rich (Seattle, WA)
I picked this drill over similiar price DeWalt 3/8" 7 Amps Pistol Grip Tradesman Drill and Skil 1/2" 7-Amp Variable Speed Drill because of the lightness and compact design of Hitchi D10VH. DeWalt felt too heavy or weight is at the drill tip. The Skill gave you a front handle grip, but most time you drill with one hand and guide with the other. The D10VH weighted center of balance is move back toward the handle, so you will get less hand fatigue. I didn't even know they made drill until I saw one at Lowes. The drill was easy to use, with variable speeds on pressure and you can also control the speed with the dial at the finger trigger which the others don't have (just pressure variable speeds). The keyless chuck works fine and the drill bits that came with it was nice.

Overall this a very good product at an afforable price. that will do most household works. I didn't like the green color scheme at first, but that isn't an issues anymore.

This is a very good drill which I bought to replace another 1/2-inch drill which kept overheating after a short period of use preventing me from finishing jobs.  "Beastly Drill" 2009-03-16
By Z. Abedin (St Louis, MO)
I bought this drill about a year ago in anticipation of a yearly construction project I do for a student group. During this project, my drill got banged up, had paint poured on it, and was abused and dropped from scaffolding, without ever quitting. Its major job was the (seemingly endless) drilling of 1" holes using old, blunt, overused spade bits. Despite the poor condition of the bits attached, my drill never slowed down, and the handle let me power through studs. Where others were getting wrist pain with their cordless drills, and having to change batteries, or re-tighten their keyless chucks, i just kept going. The chuck is SOLID, and lets you really clamp down on bits, and the metal housing for the drill's gearbox makes this thing practically indestructible. I even used this thing to drive several 3" deck screws and it wasnt that hard to maneuver, (though I dont think i'd want to be working overhead with this drill unless i was really in a pinch)

as a side note: my dad actually has this same exact drill, but with a keyless chuck, and though the keyless chuck is also made of metal and well designed, i've found that the keyed chuck simply provides better performance, and is worth the hassle of carrying a key around

I have used one of these for five or six years now. It is very strong and very tuff; I can not tell you how often this thing has bounced off a concrete floor and it still works like a champ.

Cordless drills are great, I use two of them constantly, but sometimes you just want a solid corded drill and this one fits the bill, strong but not too heavy or bulky; in fact I think that it is lighter than my 18v cordless.

I use it primarily for drilling pocket holes for building cabinets and such, when the batteries would have already drained on the cordless drills this one is still going strong.

"chuck loosens with any vibration" 2008-04-02
By B. Stenman
I found that it was necessary to keep retightening the chuck if the operation involved any amount of vibration, like using a hole saw in plywood. I have a DeWalt drill with a keyless chuck and it stays tight in the same circumstances.

For some reason DeWalt includes a cheap plastic storage case with some drills but not with others. The cases are made of very flimsy material with crude fasteners. Buying one for a drill that comes only with its cardboard box involves spending nearly $40. Milwaukee and Makita provide sturdy plastic cases with their drills so I don't know why DeWalt does not do the same.
